FAQ
ABOUT GENERAL ACUPUNCTURE

You’ve Got Questions - We’ve Got Answers

WHAT DOES ACUPUNCTURE DO?

While Western medicine treats illness by medication or surgical operation, acupuncture treats illness mainly by boosting your own immune system and balance the homeostasis. In fact, what is working is not chemicals from outside of your body but your body itself! Acupuncture is just a tool for using your own healing power effectively. For this reason, acupuncture has strong effects on preventing disease. In TCM, it’s more important to find and fix the imbalance within the body’s system while there is no visible sign of disease than to treat disease after you actually feel it. In that sense, regular acupuncture visits can work as your health check.

IS ACUPUNCTURE SAFE? PAINFUL?

Thank to the technology, the modern acupuncture needles are quite thin as 0.12mm in diameter. Because of this, usually you won’t experience pain and bleeding while needling. But because pain is a subjective feeling, the threshold is differ from person to person. For this reason, it cannot said that acupuncture is “complete pain-free” but the pain is quit mild.
Also, I use only stainless, disposable needles to prevent infections and allergic reactions to metal. Also, a Registered Acupuncturist(R.Ac) is trained for performing safe treatments (complete at least 480 hours per year of classroom theoretical instruction for two years including the western medical studies and at least 500 hours of direct patient contact) and passed the national licence examination.

ARE ACUPUNCTURE TREATMENTS COVERED BY INSURANCE?

Ask your insurance company if it covers acupuncture treatments, practised by a registered acupuncturist.  In general, they should be covered by insurance.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I HAVE AN ACUPUNCTURE TREATMENT?

It will depend on the condition being treated.    Normally, if it is acute, severe, a treament once or twice a week is recommended.  As the problem gets better, or for a chronic condition, a treatment once every two weeks should be sufficient.

To maintain your good health, a monthly appointment is recommended.

HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR AN APPOINTMENT/TREATMENT?

For the best results, eat a light meal beforehand.  Bring your own water to stay hydrated after the session.  Wear loose stretchable clothes to easily change.

WHAT SHOULD I DO POST TREATMENT?

After the acupuncture appointment, your body's metabolism is active similar to doing light exercise.  It is best to avoid vigorous exercise, overeating & drinking.  Stay hydrated to flush out the waste. Go to bed early and have a good rest in order to get the maximal results from the treatment.
